CERTH/ITI – Informatics and Telematics Institute

The CERTH/ITI research group has long and very extensive experience in intelligent medical monitoring environments and development of internet based user interfaces for control of monitored subjects, which are key requirements for the completion of the OHM objectives. The research and development team of CERTH/ITI is currently participating in many research projects funded by the EU and the Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology.

CERTH/ITI is a non-profit organization under the auspices of the General Secretarial of Research and Technology of Greece, with its head office located in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is currently supervised by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology (http://www.iti.gr/). Since 10.3.2000 it is a founding member of the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) also supervised by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology.

CERTH/ITI was set-up to constitute an advanced research centre with continuous interaction with the academic community, the National and European Informatics and Telematics  Industry, the international scientific community and the public sector.

The CERTH/ITI research group has long and very extensive experience in image and video analysis, coding and transmission algorithms. The Information Processing Laboratory of CERTH/ITI has participated in the major ACTS II and III projects DISTIMA and PANORAMA which dealt with 3D Imaging and its applications, and has very extensive experience in 3D modelling and analysis. It has also participated in the Telematics for Health project SAMMIE II (HC1044) where it developed visualization tools for 3D MRI medical images. It is currently participating in the INTERFACE (Multimodal Analysis / Synthesis System for Human Interaction to Virtual and Augmented Environments), ENORASI (Virtual Environments for the Training of Visually Impaired) and OTELO (Mobile Tele-Echography Using an Ultra-Light Robot) IST projects. CERTH/ITI is currently participating in 13 research projects funded by the EU and 21 projects funded by the Greek Secretariat for Science and Technology. Over the last four years (since 1/1/1997), the CERTH/ITI research team has authored over 55 publications in scientific journals and over 110 presentations to international conferences (for a complete list: http://www.iti.gr/).

In the immediate future, two PhD dissertations will result from the involvement of CERTH/ITI with the project. We expect to improve our current knowledge of video coding and transmission and as a result enhance our standing in the scientific community.

Dr. Michael G. Strintzis is Professor of the University of Thessaloniki and the director of the institute. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, in 1970. His current research interests are in 2D and 3D image and image sequence processing and coding. In the last 4 years, he has authored over 50 articles in scientific journals and delivered over 100 scientific conference presentations in these and similar areas. Dr. Strintzis is an IEEE senior member and a recipient of the centennial medal of the IEEE. He was a guest editor of the special issues on 3D:

IEEE Signal Processing Magazine May 99, IEEE Trans. on CSVT March 2000 and of the special issue on 3D and VR of the Journal of Applied Signal Processing to appear in 2002. Until 1999, Dr. Strintzis was a member of the RACE/ACTS Management Committee. From July 1999, he is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology.

Dr. Angelos Kanlis is an Associate Researcher at the Informatics and Telematics Institute.  He received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1992. He received the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. in Information Theory and Communications from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, in 1994 and 1997, respectively. Prior to his current position, he was an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas in Heraklion Crete, Greece, and an Intern at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center, Hawthorne, NY. His main research interests include information theory, source coding, and data compression and mobile and short-range wireless communications. He has participated in several European and National research projects and coordinated the Cretan pilot of the European Health Telematics project ATTRACT.

Nikolaos V. Boulgouris is an Associate Researcher at the Informatics and Telematics Institute. He received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1997. He currently pursues the Ph. D degree in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, AUTH, where he holds research and teaching assistantship positions. Since 1997, Mr. Boulgouris has participated in several research projects funded by  the European Union and the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology. His  research interests include wavelets, image and video coding, image processing, pattern recognition and multimedia copyright protection.  Nikolaos V. Boulgouris is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and a student member of IEEE.
