The Politecnico di Milano (PdM) includes the two different units described below.

The Research Staff of the Electrical and Electronic Measurement Section of the Department of Electrical Engineering – Politecnico di Milano – has expertise in all fields of the Electrical Measurements and modern Electronic Instrumentation. In particular, the following main sectors are covered: analog and digital signal processing, calibration and testing procedures for modern advanced measuring systems, sensors and smart sensors (with particular concern for environmental applications), distributed measurement systems based on cooperating sensors, and diagnostic of distributed systems. The Electrical and Electronic Measurement Section is undergoing joint research activities with the Electric Research Dept. and the Automatics Research Dept. of ENEL, CESI, and the CNR Institute of Plasma Physics of Milan .

The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics research activities at the Politecnico di Milano are performed within the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIRLab), founded by Marco Somalvico in 1971. The general covered areas in Artificial Intelligence are knowledge representation and acquisition, reasoning, and machine learning. The general covered areas of Robotics are manipulation, navigation, and perception. Since many years, AIRLab has industrial AI applications (expert systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and fuzzy control systems) and robotics industrial applications (artificial perception and vision, automation systems for factory, home and city, and human body artificial systems). More recently, AIRLab has put attention to the development of autonomous agent systems, and has broadened its field to include sub-symbolic approaches such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, data mining, and evolutionary computation methods.
