Information Society Technologies center (IST Center/IST-C) was set up in 1998 as a spin off from the Department of “Discrete Modelling, Analysis and Recognition” of the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of the National academy of Sciences, Armenia. The basic objective is to support the integration of local IT related research and systems development, in an associated basis, serving the RTD management, and - relations with the international research community.

IST Center is intensively related to the many important organizations in Armenia, such as National Academy of Sciences, Yerevan state University, IT Development Foundation of Armenia, Sate Department for Standardization, Certification and Metrology (SARM) and others. The IST-C members are technical and administrative representatives of these organizations. IST-C is the 6th FP IST Programme NCP for Armenia. It represents SARM at ISO.

IST-C carries out both theoretical investigations in Computer Science: Discrete Mathematics; Coding, Cryptography and Information Theory; Mathematical Logic and Theory of Algorithms; Management Support Systems and Artificial Intelligence; Classification and Image Processing; Distributed Information Systems, as well as R&D in Information Technologies: systems with implementation of Data Mining, Word Processing, Internet Automation, Image Processing and Understanding, Network protection, etc. Particular applications are systems for earthquake data analysis, special GIS, OCR system for Armenian character set, software for classification and prediction.

The base team consists of 17 scientists and engineers, 2 Doctors of science, 7 PhD re-searchers, technical and managerial staff, but the temporal staff was up to 75.

Since its start IST-C participated in following activities: INTAS 96-952 “Concurrent heuristics in data analysis and prediction”; NATO Science Programme and Cooperation Partners, Linkage Grant No. HTECH-LG 96-1170 "Distributed Information Systems for Critical Social Issues"; ESPRIT (ICIMS-NOE 9251) - INCO COPRNICUS AMETMAS-NOE "A Network Of Excellence in Advanced Methodologies and Tools for Manufacturing Systems"; Esprit 23802, INCO COPERNICUS Extension GEIXS, "Geological Electronic Information Exchange System"; InfoDev, Y2K Planning and Implementation Grants for Armenia; IST 12637 SPARTA, “Security Policy Adap-tation Reinforced Through Agents”; INTAS 00-626 “Data Mining Algorithm Incubator”; NTAS 00- 397 “Data Mining Technologies And Image Processing: Theory And Applications” and others.
