University of Applied Sciences of Fribourg, Switzerland (EIA-FR)

Description of the organisation

EIA-FR is one of the seven schools of Engineering and research centres of the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland where around 700 professors teach different scientific fields to around 6’000 students.

EIA-FR has three missions:

1.        To train engineers in the field of computer science, telecommunication, chemistry, energy, and mechanics

2.        To develop scientific applied research for the engineers

3.        To create relationship with industrial companies around a research and development centre

Emphasis is placed on the teaching of basic subjects, mathematics, physics and chemistry, tailored to the long-term needs of industry and society. In addition, courses are available in the leading fields of modern technology, with particular focus on interdisciplinary aspects. As a basis for successful exchanges between technology and society, education in the humanities is also associated with stimulation of entrepreneurial spirit and skills in communicating scientific knowledge.

Contact with industry and the business world is encouraged early in the study programme, and practical training provided through projects and external work experience. During the third academic year, students can plan their own curriculum within a modular system with credits. Strongly motivated students may elect to complete a complementary Minor in an interdisciplinary field of engineering sciences.

The MISL (Mobile Information System Laboratory) is a research unit of University of Applied Sciences of Fribourg (EIA-FR). It concentrates its research interests in two major parts: Mobile Internet technologies (WAP, GPRS, UMTS, PDA, etc.), and Information System technologies (XML, XSL, WML, etc.). The most of applied projects are in the domain of Ubiquitous Computing, Electronic Commerce, Business Communication (B2B, B2C, etc.), GRID systems (P2P, Globus,…) and distance learning.

Besides the research activities, MISL also organises and participates in many teaching activities to promote the use of document technology. Courses are either dedicated to engineer students, providing them with the bases of electronic multimedia document management, or to industry (SWISSCOM, MC&NET, METROCINE, GFI, etc.), answering specific needs about design of information system, use of hypermedia technologies, management of documents and information retrieval in multimedia documents. The MISL will be the unit at EIA-FR involved in the CARiMan NoE

CV of the partners

Pierre Kuonen obtained the diploma of electrical engineer from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) in January 1982. After having worked during five years in the industry (petroleum and CAD development) he joined, in 1988, the Computer Science Theory Laboratory of the Computer Science Department of EPFL. He was involved in teaching and research on parallel programming and Computer Science Theory. He obtained the Ph.D. degree in 1993. From 1994 to 2000 he has been a scientific collaborator, heading the Parallel Computing Research Group (GRIP) at the Computer Science Theory Laboratory and was senior lecturer of the course Parallelism for students in the third and the fourth year of study at the EPFL. During this period he managed several European and national research projects. More specifically he was involved in the ACTS project STORMS as workpackage leader. In February 2000 he joined the University of Applied Sciences of Valais as computer science professor. Besides is teaching activities he continues to actively participate to several national or international research projects. He was involved, as workpackage leader, in the MONASIDRE project (IST-2000-26144). From the beginning of March 2003 he is full time professor at the EIA-FR. Pierre Kuonen is author or co-author of about 40 scientific publications
